'Paperboy' Educators' Guide Available for Download

EduGuide coverRandom House, through its School and Library Marketing Department, has produced an outstanding Educators’ Guide for my novel.

I had the opportunity to visit with the creator of the guide, Pat Scales, at the recent American Library Association conference in Las Vegas. Pat is a former school librarian and served as president of the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the ALA, in 2008-2009. Pat has been a leader for intellectual freedom in schools and serves as an education consultant. She is a columnist for the School Library Journal.

I shared with Pat that her excellent guide had given me new insights into my own book. That’s what good teachers do, isn’t it?

Her six-page guide correlates study of the novel with Common Core standards. It’s full of exercises that bolster a young person’s understanding of the craft and structure of writing, racial/social diversity and the acquisition of knowledge.

The guide can be downloaded for free here.

This post is a personal thank you to Pat Scales who understands more than most that while “Paperboy” is a simple book, it is not simplistic.
